When I try to connect to my Windows 10 laptop from my Mac with username+password auth, !m doesn’t accept the details – “Authentication failed, please try again”. When I try the other way around it works perfectly. I’m using dynamic DNS to connect to both.

Both are connected to the same router, where both have static IP’s and ARP binding. UPnP is enabled and I can see that the Mac is using it but the PC is not; it’s also enabled in the PC config file. When I do ‘nxserver.exe –upnpmap’ the external ip is 64.0.0.0 and there is no mention of upnp being in use. In the GUI server config, only nx://local_ip:port shows up, whereas the mac has nx://local_ip:port, ssh://local_ip:port and nx://external_ip:port . I also can’t set a gateway port – the box is greyed out and when I check it, it says ‘failed to map the port on the gateway’ after a few seconds.

    Please help a brother :/

Both systems on the latest free version. MacOS 10.15.7, Windows 10 Pro 20H2

There’s no need to change the gateway port

“Authentication failed, please try again” – this indicates that you are reaching the Windows host but that the username and/or password are incorrect. Are you 100% sure that you are using the right credentials of a system account on the Windows PC?

I am pretty sure, yeah. I use the password to sign in to the machine multiple times per day. I did suspect that the username might be some more user-friendly version of the actual username, but I read that !m accepts various different username schemes and I couldn’t find any other username anywhere on the PC

The reason I thought changing the gateway might help was that one was set by default on the Mac, so I was trying to replicate the same settings on the PC

Can I ask if there are any special characters in the username, and what the username is?

Can you also show me what you have set in Windows -> Language (see screenshot)? The Windows display language and default input should be enough.
