So my client is OSX 10.10.2 and my server is Ubuntu 13.10.

Both machines have version 4.4.12 of NoMachine running. (I assume both are 4.4.12 I just downloaded them both today)

I’m trying to connect to the ubuntu machine from my osx machine. When I try to connect I see the ubuntu desktop just fine and it seems to work pretty nicely. What I would like to do is connect to just one specific application in a floating window. I keep seeing instructions online that say I need to create a “Custom Session” but after I enter my username/password I just get thrown into the ubuntu desktop without any buttons or options to create a custom session.

Please help me out here, I’m not sure where to go from here.

p.s. I have X11 installed on my mac (Well XQuartz but that just replaces X11)

This is custom session and is available as part of the virtual desktop functionality. The free version doesn’t include the virtual desktop feature. Try the Workstation, it’s available in evaluation: https://www.nomachine.com/download-enterprise#NoMachine-Workstation.
