I am using the free NoMachine on my Linux Mint 19.3 to help a friend use her Windows 10 computer.

Since she is totally blind she uses a screen reader to great effect. When she has a problem she calls me and I can log in to her computer with NoMachine and sort the problem. – when it works -it is fantastic!

However, when her IP address changes – I would need to know her new IP address. Yes, a sighted person could just click on the NoMachine icon and view the Service status and read out the NX:// number. Unfortunately her screen reader is unable to ‘read’ this pop up. Is there another way of finding out her IP address and port number which her screen reader may be able to interpret?

Hi, there is a way to query the IP address and have it read out to you, using the a file which I can send you which contains a script we’ve prepared. I’ve tested it to make sure it works. Can I send it to the email address you used to register?

By double-clicking on it, it will open the cmdline and execute –upnpstatus (which is what you need to run in order to get the output required (Local IP, Gateway IP, External IP, NX port 4000 mapped). So she would need to listen for the external IP as it’s being read out. Can you try it and let me know? We’ll investigate how to make retrieving information easier in this type of scenario.

Yes, something like that would be useful – please send it to my email. ( I did receive an email from you but there was no attachment)

By the way – did I make it clear that my blind friend uses Windows, so the script would need to be written for that. (although I’m using Linux on my computer)

    Thank you for your time

Hi, here it is, it’s probably easier this way.

Hi – thanks for this. Yes, it does open and reveal the IP address we need but…..

I’m sorry to report that my friend’s Screen Reader cannot read it (presumably because it is in the command box) . Would it be possible to adjust the script to out put the result to a Text file – and open that text file directly. I know for a fact that the screen reader can ‘read’ text files easily.

Thank you for your help with this.

…and a second slightly related question…  the last 5 digits …seem to be the port number.   Am I correct in thinking that even if the Public External address alters, that these 5 port digits always remain the same??

It works on Windows 10 using the system’s own screen reader which is shipped with the OS. Are you using something else?

The port might change, but you can fix it in the server.cfg file of the computer you want to access and then it won’t.

You need admin rights to make the following changes.

On Windows the server.cfg file is in ProgramFiles x86 (the default location) -> NoMachine -> etc folder (Program Files (x86)/NoMachine/etc). You can edit the server.cfg with a text editor.

Locate the key NXUPnPPort,  remove “#” next to it and put the port number you would like to fix it to. Then save.

Thanks – yes she uses Dolphin Screen Reader ( https://yourdolphin.com/en-gb )

Will this ‘work around’ tell me her correct information :- if I ask her to open a browser and Google “What is my Public IP address” – because her screen reader can read the browser well. Is this IP address it produces the correct one?

Provided there are no problems as highlighted in the article I showed you and you query your public IP address, it will be the correct information.

Btw, I tried the software you mentioned and it has a problem in general with reading cmd.exe content, so you had better take this issue directly to them. Windows 10’s own Narrator works well with prompt’s content.

Try the new script, it will write the output to notepad.

A new feature we are working on, NoMachine Network, will remove this need to check the IP address by allowing users who have created Network accounts to log in and allow other authorised NoMachine Network users to access their desktop. This will probably be much easier for her. You can read more about this here: https://www.nomachine.com/FR07J02731
