NoMachine works great when I manually login to xwindows and run the server.  However after restart it refuses to connect.  I thought I remember a setting for enabling the server on restart but it doesn’t seem to work.

    Logs attached.

What version and product of NoMachine software are you using on the Linux side?
    What is the distro?
    What’s the desktop environment?

Is it headless?  See the tips here:

    Is Wayland used?

Is it a virtual machine? If so, check this article:

The line in my custom.conf with Wayland is commented out.  Should I uncomment it and set to True?

I’m using latest NoMachine 7.8.2 and the server is Ubuntu 20.04.

Remove the #, check that WaylandEnable=false in your custom.conf , save and reboot the OS.
