As a newbie I’m trying to determine whether it is possible to allow a virtual desktop (on Linux) to have its own IP rather than refering to each virtual desktop via a different port.

We’re looking at Small Server Edition to run on RHEL6.  Preferably with a KDE desktop

This isn’t possible with NoMachine alone. You would probably need to set up each desktop in virtual machines (e.g with VMware, check their FAQS on how to do it) and then install NoMachine for Linux to get access to the physical desktops you create.
