I often connect to an Ubuntu server with ssh or vnc with no issues from my Mac. I wanted to try NoMachine but when I connect the keymapping is very strange. For example the “qwerty” keys map to “789-=[” and “asdf” keys map to “abcd”. Both machines are set to US standard keymaps. Connecting to the same desktop with VNC gives me the correct keys. What could be going on?

VNC display has such keyboard mapping. Is it possible you are running Xvnc in place of Xorg? Check with command:
    ps -C X,Xorg,Xvnc -f
