I am using a NoMachine server 6.2.4 on Linux Mint 19 (based on Ubuntu 18.4). It’s using the Cinnamon desktop. My client is Windows 7, also NoMachine 6.2.4.

Sometimes when I type it will drop keystrokes or get them out of order. For example, typing “hello” will show up as “helol”.  I have to type very slowly and sometimes the keystrokes take over a second to show up. This happens intermittently. For example, as I typed the last few sentences, I was experiencing the lag and mistakes, but for this sentence it’s working fine.

I don’t think network latency is a problem. The server is on a fiber connection and the client is on a business cable connection. Ping between the 2 machines is 18ms. I’ve not had lag with tigervnc or realvnc. (I had other problems, but not this one). I guess it’s possible my network gets intermittently laggy, but I’ve just not noticed it with other applications.

I tried reducing the quality in the Display Settings, but that doesn’t seem to help. I don’t know what other settings might be most likely to help

    Hello mwshook,

Could you tell me whether the problem arises connecting to a physical or a virtual display?

Could you specify the NoMachine product in use (free version, Workstation, etc)?

We are going to create a debug build of NoMachine libraries in order to identify the source of the issue you have reported. Please let us now if you are interested in trying it.

I was connecting to a physical display using 6.2.4 free client on Windows and the same version server on Linux.

Weirdly, I was running Chromium on xcsrv in rootless mode and had the exact same problem. I’ve had various keyboard problems on this Windows machine with different versions of VNC too. I guess it’s possible there’s some problem with how Windows 7 is handling the keystrokes.

I have since tried out x2go and it seems to work much better for my purposes. I can run individual applications rootless. My understanding is that NoMachine only does that on the paid versions. X2go is also more responsive for me. So I don’t think I will be pursuing this bug further.

    Thanks,

    -Matt

From what you’ve written it doesn’t appear to be a NoMachine-related problem, and I’ll add that it’s not one that we’ve been able to reproduce.

But it seems that what you need is a different product – that’s like comparing apples and pears. How do you know your other solution is more responsive if you’ve not tried it? It’s free to download, no registration required.

NoMachine offers two product families. One for remote desktop and one for virtual desktop on Linux (i.e., terminal server on Linux functionality) and it’s the latter that you need given that what you actually want is to run Linux applications in rootless mode. I’m sorry you found an alternative for your terminal server solution. I don’t think it’s because NoMachine isn’t responsive or doesn’t fit your needs.  I think what you are looking for is a free terminal server, aimed at organizations & professionals, which is the NoMachine Workstation you are referring to 🙂

A number of projects have expressed interest in continuing open-source development of NoMachine’s legacy NX 3 software. While these projects use software released by NoMachine as open-source, NoMachine does not endorse them in any way nor has any control on the quality or the functionality of the software they distribute.
