I’m posting this in the mobile section because I’m trying to connect over a moble network. The set up is similar to using internet sharing over a mobile phone using the hotspot feature.

I have a computer at home which is connected to the internet by way of a 4G router using a Vodafone mobile sim card. I can get the public IP address of the router (from whatsmyip.com for example) but I believe that Vodafone then uses a system called Carrier Grade NAT (CGNAT) to share that IP address amongst numerous devices. When I look at the status of the router it tells me

    Connection Type4G LTE /3G
    Service Type4G
    Network Namevodafone UK
    Link StatusEstablished.
    Connection Time11:34:27
    IP Address: XX.XX.XXX.XXX
    Subnet Mask255.255.255.XXX
    DNS Server10.XXX.XXX.X , XX.XX.XXX.X
    Gateway: XX.XX.XXX.XXX

I have configured the router to port forward to the linux machine on my home network and configured NoMachine on my windows 10 laptop to connect with the IP address given by whatsmyip.com on the correct port but the connection can not be established. The message is:

“A connection timeout has occurred while trying to connect to ‘185.69.144.xxx’ on port ‘4000’. The issue could either be caused by a networking problem, by a firewall or NAT blocking incoming traffic or by a wrong server address. Please verify your configuration and try again.”

I’m sure it’s because there is an extra layer of NAT (CGNAT) between my router and the internet. When I attempt to make the same connection using [removed] then I can connect without any problems (other than that the link keeps dropping, which is why I’m trying NoMachine)

I have seen that there is a Feature Request for a ‘NoMachine network service’ which would probably look more like the [Anydesk] solution (and may end up with the same issues…???) but for now I’m wondering if there is a relatively simple implementation workaround?

    Thanks in anticipation

What i have understood that this issue is probably connected with the fact that your provider does not offer real public IP but nated one. So basically you are using [ public ip ] — [ second level provider IP ] –> [ LAN subnetwork ].

You can confirm that by comparing IP from whatismyip to the IP provided in your 4G router.

If that is the case you can ask your network provider to assign direct public IP to the 4G router or to wait for our feature https://www.nomachine.com/FR07J02731.

    Yep,

That’s where I believe I am. The network ISP does not offer static ip addresses so I’m waiting for the feature request to get implemented.

I’ve been watching this feature request for a couple of years now. Do you have any indication when it might be implemented?

The release of this FR will be moved to version 9 at least, and the FR will also be updated to show this.
