I have had connection issues with NoMachine connecting from my laptop at work to my home pc, getting the error, “A connection timeout has occurred while trying to connect to ‘xxxxxxxx’ on port ‘xxxx’. The issue could either be caused by a networking problem, by a firewall or NAT blocking incoming traffic or by a wrong server address. Please verify your configuration and try again,“.

I am able to make things work when both are on my home network and I am using a VPN on both at all times. I thought it might be an issue with dynamic IPs, but when I got home last night, I was able to connect to my desktop.

Anyone have any clue of a solution or what my issue is?

If you are using a VPN you could use the local IP to connect. Are you using a local or public IP and port to connect? To make sure if the entered IP is correct, you should set static IP for the machine (by example using these instructions: https://www.lifewire.com/change-your-ip-address-818150).

However if the connection over the VPN is not possible, you can connect by enabling UPnP. Please refer to the instructions in “Getting started with NoMachine” (https://www.nomachine.com/getting-started-with-nomachine). To read more about enabling UPnP, see the article “How to connect to NoMachine when the server is behind a NAT router or a firewall”: https://www.nomachine.com/AR11L00827).
