    I have NoMachine¬†6.4.6 running on an Ubuntu box and NoMachine 6.6.8 running on a Windows 10 box. When I connect from my Windows box to my Linux box and log in it always opens a new user session with my user name/password rather than logging into the existing session. This didn’t used to happen and I’m not sure when it changed or how to change it back to logging into my existing session. How do I do this?

    Thanks!

    Check that you have one of the Terminal Server products installed e.g. Workstation, Terminal Server. You can do that by following the steps here: https://www.nomachine.com/AR07C00232.

    If you have the free NoMachine product installed you will connect to the physical display of the remote computer. You say “it didn’t use to happen”. What product did you install beforehand?

    More information about the free edition of NoMachine is here: https://www.nomachine.com/AR10K00700

    $ sudo /usr/NX/bin/nxserver –version

    [sudo] password for:

    NoMachine – Version 6.6.8

    It looks like it may have been a version issue, I just updated my Linux box to the latest version and now its connecting to the existing session. I will verify this from my other machine as well.

    Have you updated the Ubuntu OS or the NoMachine package on the Linux box? We aren’t aware of any issues like this, but if you tell us the version of Ubuntu we can check it anyway.

    If the problem comes back, let us know.

    This is on 18.04.2 LTS, it appears to be working with NoMachine 6.6.8 on both boxes but was not working when the Ubuntu box was running 6.4.6.

    So it occurred again, both versions at 6.6.8. It was working earlier in this week (login to existing user session) but then when I tried to remote in today it logged into a new user session. After some debugging it appears that restarting the NX server on the machine I am connecting to resolves the issue (I can log into an existing user session after a restart) but I’m not sure why it goes from being able to log into an existing session to not being able to log in to an existing session.¬† In the meantime is there a way to restart the NX server on a machine either remotely or via the command line that I could use next time this happens?

    Thanks!

    Are you being shown the question: “Cannot connect any display running. Do you want NoMachine to create a new display and proceed to connect to the desktop?” right? Can you choose “No” and wait to see if the session appears on the session list?

    NX server logs from server side would be helpful to investigate problem. Please enable debug, reproduce problem and send logs to forum[at]nomachine[dot]com. There is instruction how to enable and collect debug logs automatically: https://www.nomachine.com/DT10O00162

    In the meantime is there a way to restart the NX server on a machine either remotely or via the command line that I could use next time this happens?

    Command for restart nxserver is sudo /usr/NX/bin/nxserver --restart, you can also execute it remotely using SSH.
