We are looking at going with a VDI system but we need to be able to assign a different windows volume id to each new instance in order to allow our software to recognize the role of each desktop. Does any Virtual Desktop software allow you to assign a custom volume id to the instance? Here is what a Windows volume id does.

The Volume ID of a hard drive is a unique identification system. The Volume ID is used by the hard drive to identify itself to both the operating system and the user. Normally, the Volume ID is an eight-digit series of numbers and letters and it will be printed on the hard drive itself. In cases where the hard drive is not easily accessible, such as in a laptop, the Volume ID for a specific drive may also be located through the command prompt.

Can you provide some more information about your set-up? Which of our products are you looking at?

I am not sure how to answer your question. We are looking to go with a total VDI system or a DAS but the key as to what system we are going to go with is whether or not we can use the volume id function.

If you want to host Windows OS as a desktop service you will need a hypervisor such as VMware, Virtualbox or another. On it you install NoMachine Enterprise Desktop for Windows, and your users will get access by installing the NoMachine client on their devices/PCs. It’s still not clear to me how you want to use the Volume ID function in conjuntion with NoMachine. Perhaps this isĀ  more of a question for pre-sales. Why don’t you contact our sales team with all the details about your environment and what you would like to achieve? https://www.nomachine.com/contact-request
