Hi DavidB, the upcoming feature NoMachine Network will solve all your problems of not having a fixed IP address, or having double routers and so forth. You can read more about that here: https://www.nomachine.com/FR07J02731.

For now, take a look at this article and see if it helps your case:

Make sure you have already generated an SSH key pair, for example by using the ssh-keygen tool on a Linux host and that the keys are in OpenSSH format. (https://www.nomachine.com/AR02L00785) We tested on the fly to make sure and it works fine.

If you want to run a virtual Linux desktop you need to install Workstation.

Can you send us the complete set of logs from the Windows client? You can either submit them here if they’re not too large, or you can send them to forum[at]nomachine[dot]com. Server side logs as well would be useful. That way we can take a look at what’s going on both sides.

On Linux, look for /usr/NX/var/log/node/C-* and you will see a line like “Using H.264 hardware encoding” or in “H.264 software encoding”. On the client side, for Windows, the path will be something like this: C:/Users/username/.nx and there will be list of session folders with the session files inside.

We are planning to make this information about H.264 available in the user interface in a future version to make it easier for the user to check what type of H.264 (HW or SW) is being used.

On the Linux server you can also check the session files in /usr/NX/var/log/node/C-* by executing:

    grep -i encod /usr/NX/var/log/node/C-*/session

    1) When I understand you now correctly the maximum number of virtual desktops is limited to 4? We cannot increase it with any version, thats a limitation of NoMachine?

I didn’t say that 🙂  Let me take you back to the table I pasted in another reply. Make your choice from those products. You mention 10, so Small Business Server might be what you need. It will give you 10 virtual desktops. The next one, which gives you unlimited, is Terminal Server.

    2) Please explain me the number of cores in the licensing, what does it mean?

For an explanation of our licensing policy, please see: https://www.nomachine.com/AR11B00072

Acki, it depends what you want to do.

You previously wrote “Now we would like to be able to connect more then one person to the server.”

Do you want people to connect to the same remote desktop, so they all see the same thing? If so, you need Enterprise Desktop. All users can connect with their own account and they will all see the same activity on the remote desktop. This is also what the free edition does, with the exception of only one connection being allowed at any one time.

Or do you want people to be able to connect to their own individual desktop, where each of these desktops is running on the same host? If so, this is what we call Linux Terminal Server. It’s available only for Linux. So the example I gave earlier with Workstation – 4 single users can connect and each have their own Linux desktop, each one is separate from the other. If other users want to connect to these virtual desktops, they can view and interact (if permitted by the owner of the desktop). The number of virtual desktops cannot exceed 4, the total number of connections is unlimited.

How can I check whether the hardware decoding on the server is working?

Connect to the remote desktop and open the connection menu Ctrl-Alt-0.  Menu > Display > Change settings. Check what’s indicated at the bottom of the panel as in picture. More info is available here: https://www.nomachine.com/DT07M00087#5

You add Terminal Server Node to an Enterprise Terminal Server. Check out the tutorial in the Tutorials section of the Support page.

Hi Nicu, the message you pasted is from Cloud Server which is used as a gateway or broker to access other NoMachine servers, and also foreign servers. Its suitable for organizations which want to create their own “cloud of servers”. You should add other servers from our Enterprise range. Here you can find more information:

    https://www.nomachine.com/adding-servers-to-nomachine-cloud-server-via-the-user-interface

If you want to just access the remote desktop on your Ubunu host, install the free NoMachine edition. You can download it from here: https://www.nomachine.com/download.

We have 3 tutorials available depending on your provider (Azure, Amazon, GCP), all for Linux. Take your pick 🙂 Go here: https://www.nomachine.com/all-documents and scroll down to the bottom, the last three links of the Tutorials section might interest you.

I think you should start your comparison here: https://www.nomachine.com/comparison-terminal-server-products

If you want to be able to run multiple individual desktops on the same Linux host and each user connect to their own, you could start with the Workstation edition which allows up to 4 Linux desktop (what we call virtual desktops).

If, on the other hand, you want multiple users to be able to connect to the same physical desktop so they are all seeing the same thing, Enterprise Desktop will let you do this. Compare the free version with Enterprise Desktop here: https://www.nomachine.com/remote-access-for-everyone.

What is the difference between physical desktop and virtual desktop?
    https://www.nomachine.com/AR10K00700

You can download the evaluation software of all Enterprise products by opening the menu on the website -> Download -> NoMachine Enterprise Products Evaluation.

On the connecting side you can either keep NoMachine (the free server/client) or if you just want the client, download and install Enterprise Client for your OS.

You cannot force a remote connection to the physical display whilst the checkbox for “Require permission to let remote users connect” is checked in the Security settings of the server (the PC you want to connec to). Take a look at the tutorial I passed to you in your other topic, and you should also look at the Guide here: https://www.nomachine.com/DT10O00155#2.2. If that checkbox is ticked, it is assumed the owner is physically sitting in front of the computer (server) and can accept the incoming connection when prompted.
The first checkbox you see in the Security tab lets you decide whether the server can accept the incoming connection automatically or ask for the desktop owner’s authorization. Quoting the guide:

“Select Require permission to let remote users connect when the explicit approval of the desktop owner is necessary. This option applies only to connections to the physical desktop when the connecting user is not the desktop owner. If the incoming user is the desktop owner, he/she will always connect and no request for authorization is issued.”

The request for desktop owner’s authorization is enabled by default. If the owner of the desktop has left their desk, then you should ask them to configure NoMachine access accordingly in order to share their computer with you.
