Port forwarding should work without problem. NoMachine will work well in the mentioned environment. Consider that without GPU, NoMachine will use a bit more CPU to complete graphic tasks.
Can you verify that you can access MacOS from iPhone, for example checking if you are on same subnetwork.

Bandwidth usage of NoMachine in my tests varies from few kbps to 4 Mbps. Higher bandwidth consumption are possible with 4K resolution.

Possibly problem is related to some network issues you are experiencing on servers or client side.
Please can you tell us if you are using wifi, vpn or some other network configuration like port forwarding?
to be able to have better understanding of issue can you check latency between client and server using ping command. You can monitor it to see if there are some drop of connection or increase of the latency.
If you are using wifi, is it possible to check connection using the cable?
Please can you check your Energy Saver settings as this looks that you options active “Computer sleep” and “Wake for network access”.

Verify if nxnode is enabled in the Security and Privacy/Accessibility.
Can you verify if the IP of the CentOS server is reachable from your Windows client.
If yes, ssh to the server and check status of the NoMachine server using
sudo /etc/NX/nxserver --status.
If server is disabled you can restart it by using command
sudo /etc/NX/nxserver --restart
Can you try NoMchine Feature “Connect a Network Port” if it can solve your issue.

I would ask you to check
1. if you have firewall blocking port 4000
2. try to connect to the 127.0.0.1:4000 on that Windows XP
